We are a deeply broken people - the red pill
To recap:
Obesity (BMI) is a lagging indicator of something seriously wrong
Calories in Calories out is a post event observation with circular logic - it is not the cause
Something is making us very hungry whilst also pathologically slowing our metabolisms
When you move away from Obesity as the issue and see it as a result/lagging indicator, you can start to see where people are and what they struggle with before they develop Obesity.
The best identifier I have for this is currently these "red pill" questions I have been using for people:
When was the last time you ate half your meal/dessert/plate and your body just rejected food - it just sent all the subconscious signals to tell you to stop eating?
Almost like a 3 year old who doesn't want to finish dinner but you likely felt this at 21.
When was the last time you didn't think about food and when you got hungry you literally had zero idea what to eat or what was in your fridge?
If everything is in the green - both should have been in the last week.
When I asked this of a lean healthy looking cyclist I met in a swanky hotel this weekend he almost cried. (My guess is he's 35 - my age)
Full on watery eyes.
He had a vivid memory of his 19th birthday cake looking, smelling, tasting unbelievable but after 2 bites he just wasn't into it and he went on with his life.
He thinks about it a lot as that is how he wants to feel now.
In 15 years that is the last time he remembers leaving food on a plate.
Obesity rates are a lagging indicator.
We are deeply broken.
Don't let the scale dictate when it is time to try and change your environment/situation.
The appropriateness of food noise/hunger should be objectively measured:
1️⃣ Is the current level causing unhealthy weight?
2️⃣ Is it causing psychological distress?
If you make a laughably large dinner plate, like 2x the normal food... you should naturally not be able to finish it, not consciously, but your hormones should just tell you, you are done whilst there is food on the plate.
