I’d be curious if they studied bodybuilders. Not necessarily the hulking mass monsters but regular gym bros. I myself have been dieting every late winter early spring to get down to 6-7% body fat for decades now. No metabolic issues whatsoever, though it’s got harder to maintain over 50. When I was younger I remember getting bored with my 6 pack and decided to just eat more once.

nowadays the going recommendation is that bodybuilders at least take t3 during a cut to offset the downregulation.

by any reasonable estimation these guys will have some permanent suppression

That would be an incorrect assumption. I myself have done many simple test/cytomel pyramid cycles in my younger days. I fluctuate at 10 lbs at most in a year, heavy after Christmas and leanest in June.

There are so many poisons in our food and what we (not me) eat themselves have fundamentally changed. HFCS, seed oils and additives are IMO responsible. But our modern civilization is terrible for our health. EMF’s actually slower our metabolism by interfering with the ATP cycle. The author of one blog suggested it’s the cause of diabetes as it was ultra rare in the literature before electricity and presented totally differently than today. Sufferers would die of starvation . It’s fascinating
